Step 4: Analysing your benthos

After you complete the Stream Assessment Field Trip, it's time to analyse the data you collected and come to preliminary conclusions about the quality of your water source.

The EcoSpark protocols use ten indices to determine whether your stream is "potentially impaired" or "unimpaired." The aggregate approach allows for a more accurate conclusion, though still preliminary, conclusion.

EcoSpark makes it easy for you to calculate the ten indices. You can use either of the resources below depending upon your time constraints or your students' skill-levels. Choose from:

  • Data Analysis Calculator (in excel form) which will automatically calculate the health of your stream based upon the benthos (bugs) you found

  • Data Analysis Calculator (online version) which will automatically calculate the health of your stream based upon the benthos (bugs) you found

  • Data Analysis Handout which will allow you and your students to manually calculate the health of your stream based upon the benthos you found
