This data is the result of students, teachers, volunteers and EcoSpark staff monitoring Benthic Macro-Invertebrates (BMIs) in streams across Southern Ontario according to a standardized protocol. The abundance and diversity of BMI species can help assess stream health, which is quantified as an index. The most commonly used index for assessing stream health using BMIs is the Hilsenhoff Biotic Index (HBI). HBI is a value calculated using both the number of each type of BMI found, as well as its tolerance level to pollution. A Benthic Aggregate Assessment (BAA) provides a more robust measurement of the condition at a stream site. BAA compares 10 different BMI indices, including HBI, to determine whether a stream site is impaired, potentially impaired or unimpaired.
