CatGrass Growers: Let's keep our Indoor Cats Entertained with this Conservation craft
Outdoor cats are a major conservation issue. Outdoor cats have been responsible for the decline of many species of birds, mammals and reptiles. But how to entertain our indoor feline friends? Try these catgrass growers as a simple family-friendly project to grow a special treat for kitty...and help birds and wildlife thrive outside!
Materials
1 seed pack of catgrass oats (check the local hardware store)
3 small paper cups
1 old nylon stocking (thrift stores have lots)
15 cotton balls
Scissors
Pencil
Markers
Optional: Use glue to add on decorations like shapes cut from paper or recycled crafts. (Don't allow pets direct contact with materials that could harm them.)
Step 1: For each cup, decorate with a silly face or as you like. Use the pencil to poke a drainage hole in the bottom.
Step 2: Cut the foot part of the stocking to use, or tie 1 end of a 6-inch length, to make 3 small mesh bags. Drape each bag inside a cup with the tops open over the edges.
Step 3: Pour 1/3 of the seeds into each bag.
Step 4: Place about 5 cotton balls into each bag. Carefully tie the bags closed, with the seeds and cotton inside. Then, tuck them seed-side-up in the cups.
Step 5: Water regularly and let drain, keeping moist for 5-7 days in a sunny window.
Step 6: Watch the "hair" sprout, just like the chia toys we remember! Kitty will enjoy small clippings or grazing on the natural treat.
