When I heard about the opportunity to be a part of the  Greenbelt Youth Charter, I immediately signed up. Mother Nature does not have a voice but I do—we all do!

EcoSpark’s Greenbelt Youth Charter Bus Tour allowed youth ambassadors from different parts of southern Ontario, including the Peel Region, York Region, Durham Region and Toronto, to come together for a common cause: to protect the Ontario Greenbelt. This experience not only allowed students to meet people with similar interests but it also enabled us to learn more about Ontario’s unique landscapes. The opportunity to talk to industry professionals was also a valuable one as I hope to become a conservation biologist in the future. Getting an insight of southern Ontario gave me an idea of what needs to be protected now so that it will still be intact 20 years down the road.

As I looked out the window from my seat, I saw the scenery change before me. From the hustle and bustle of the downtown core to the vast farmlands to the rich forests bursting with life, I was able to witness it all in just two days. After visiting a variety of locations within the Greenbelt, we were ready to construct the Ontario Greenbelt Youth Charter. Not only were we exposed to the landscape of the Greenbelt but also its historical and cultural significance as well. I was awestruck by the vast diversity this land contained and I felt compelled to protect it. I think everyone on the tour did too. This charter gives youth a voice about what we want for the future of the Greenbelt and I’m so excited for the big reveal!

This was a once- in-a-lifetime experience and highlights the importance of not only preserving the land but also the heritage and businesses found within the Greenbelt. I was able to see what the Greenbelt has to offer and meet many like-minded people. If you ever get the chance, I strongly recommend a visit to the Greenbelt. When you experience it for yourself, you’ll understand why so many people are making an effort to protect this wonderful green space called the Ontario Greenbelt.

I hope you’re with us on our mission to preserve the Greenbelt.
