Sparking Science through Mentorship

Back by popular demand is our Sparking Science through Mentorship Conference! This event showcases women working in STEM with a social purpose. Drawing from different fields, ages and backgrounds, these fantastic women will mentor young women entering grade 9 this fall in Durham Region. Our goal is to increase science literacy and demonstrate that a career in science is fun, satisfying and comes in many different shapes and forms!

Sparking Science Speakers

Christina GuzzoWe are excited to announce our keynote speaker - Dr. Christina Guzzo! Dr. Guzzo is an Assistant Professor of Virology at the University of Toronto Scarborough whose work involves cutting edge research on HIV pathogenesis. She will also be one of the Sparking Science mentors. Click here for her bio.


Aaliyah JaleelAaliyah Jaleel will be introducing our keynote speaker. Aaliyah is a grade 10 student at Dunbarton High School. As participant in last year's conference, she is thrilled to share her amazing experience from 2017. Click here for her bio.


Our closing speaker will be Dr. Rene Harrison. Dr. Harrison is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough. As a cell biologist, she studies the inner workings of immune cells. Click here for her bio.


Sparking Science Mentors

We've secured an amazing group of diverse female STEM mentors this year. Their areas of interest and expertise range from ecology, sustainabaility, engineering, chemistry, physiotherapy, psychology, science education and much much more! Click here to learn more about these wonderful women!


Sparking Science Schools & Registration

This conference is limited to students from the following DDSB schools: 

  1. Ajax High School
  2. Dunbarton High School
  3. Pickering High School
  4. Pine Ridge Secondary School
  5. Port Perry High School


Please register if you are:

  1. a female or female-identifying
  2. entering grade 9 in the fall at one of the DDSB schools listed above
  3. have an interest in science or want to learn more!
  4. are available for the full day on October 10, 2018


Registration is required for participants and volunteers. Please register by September 30, 2018.

Sparking Science through Mentorship is a collaboration between EcoSpark, Dunbarton High School, University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) and Durham District School Board. The conference is supported by the Office of the Vice-Principal Research and the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean at UTSC, Veridian, the SHSM program and Ontario Power Generation.
